KSoM Weekly Student Seminar

KSoM is organising a student seminar/discussion session in Mathematics at KSoM every week, the aim of which is to provide a platform for all nearby research scholars and willing faculties to gather around and discuss mathematics on advanced research areas. The duration of the seminar would be roughly 1.5 hours. Research scholars or faculties who would like to attend may kindly contact the student representative Sandeep E M via email at sandeep@ksom.res.in.

Title: The Lonely Runner Conjecture

Date: 26th Oct 2017, 3 pm.
Venue: Seminar Hall, Kerala School of Mathematics.
Speaker: Mr. Sreejith M M, Research Scholar, KSoM

Abstract: The Lonely Runner Conjecture states that if runners with constant but different speeds are running on a circular track with unit circumference, for any runner there will be a time at which he is lonely; i.e., he is away from all other runners by a distance which is at least 1/n. In this talk, we will try to prove the cases n=1,2,3. A convenient reformulation of the problem and an optimal bound for the distance  will also be discussed.
